Did your earnings
Total Votes: 57
January 2008 - April 2008. Revenue decreasing.
Here is my 2008 Newsvine earnings:
Month, visitors, views, earnings, c/visitor, c/view
January, 8100, 12488, $45,34, 0,56, 0,36
February, 5275,7586, $26,90, 0,51, 0,35
March, 11130, 14671, $60,64, 0,54, 0,41
April, 3738, 5238, $5,59, 0,15, 0,11
So as in March I got $0,54 per visitor, in April I got $0,15 per visitor :-(
Everyone I have seen the earning are about 1/4 the normal. Maybe lack of good ad's ? Perhaps overwhelming number of MSNBC newcomers and them not clicking ad's ? and in general just not many seeded or written articles. Hard to tell, strange results thats for sure.
My earnings for April were 1/5 those for March, with essentially an equal number of visitors, pageviews, seeds and articles. It's a stretch to think that the lowered earnings were a result of the behavior of all or a significant portion of my 6-7,000 visitors suddenly changing. Individual behavior can be that variable, but behavior over a sizeable group is rarely that malleable. My bet is that the payout per ad-click was cut. And it's a shame that Newsvine staff didn't bother to say so ahead of time.
For me, the reduction amounts to the difference between buying my wife a nice dinner and buying her a pack of cigarettes, but for some of the higher profile authors on Newsvine, I'm sure the cut in pay was substantial.
Just when I was thinking that I could rely on Newsvine for some discretionary spending $, they go and seriously reduce my motivation for seeding and writing very much. Ah, well... their loss.

@iarnuocon
I know its a stretch, I agree, but I was looking at the traffic and we had about 7000 comments on Tim Russert's death and many of those were from MSNBC feeds, also we had some pretty slow response times and there were a couple articles about people not able to get on to Newsvine during some of those times and also during the other large MSNBC feeds.
Also I spend alot of time going thru those MSNBC feeds and its rare to ever see any regular Newsviners in those, its almost always people from MSNBC. So what I will see is a thread that might have 400 comments, yet only 40 votes and those people also tend not to go to other columns. So I was wondering if they also did not vote.
Mark did address a little about the reduced payout with a email to Myk that Myk published.
Hmmm... the Russert thing is a June issue. I don't see how it could have affected April's payout. And while I agree we've seen an influx of MSNBC folks, I hardly ever get them visiting my column. Unless there's some sort of weird system which pays out proportional to the total traffic of the site, rather than at a fixed rate based on an authors drawing power, I'm not sure how the influx of MSNBC folks could have reduced April's payout. It really does seem to me to be a case of Newsvine simply cutting their rate.
It would be nice for someone from the staff to publicly address the issue.
I'll see if I can find Myk's article.
The Russert one was just on top of my head, then there was that huge seed called (or Nicked named) the Joycean Dilema)..
There are a couple references on the Myk article. Allen N wrote one also, Pieces of it are here.
April Newsvine Earnings -- I Take a Nose Dive...
Myks Email I was talking about
So...Looks like you have done alot better job at looking at it then me. I have been so busy with the COH and spam hunting, that has been my main thing and my column gets only a tiny amount of traffic, so in thinking about it, your logic sounds far more logical then mine...
Must be that Birthday coming up in a couple days has frozen the brain cells from working correctly...
So our loss is someone else's gain? How predictable if so.
A site with an ever growing readership suffers a month where they sell less ads is the only alternative I can think of.
So look at this thing and tell me if it makes any sense, Joules posted it the other day, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out, what the heck it really means, if I believed this thing, I am ahead of Killfile ? yeah right.....maybe in giving people a hard time about the COH, but thats about it....
I would be curious if you make any sense out of this thing...if so, does this mean that for June, we go up or down ? This graph goes up for "Page reach" (Geographic ?) but views don't look so great.
Reach for Newsvine.com: +33%
Page Views per user forNewsvine.com: -39%
3 mos. Change
However...Pasi is still da Boss !!
I am not sure Pasi ? I might have to ask Al Gore on that one....
Down is an understatement. I made literally 10 times more in March than I did in April Anyone from Newsvine care to comment?
- J
Maybe you could start seeding some good stuff Pasi ?
Duplicate comment - please delete.
I was thinking of getting involved again with PETA But then I kinda need to support our Seahawks as much as I can do for those guys out there as a loyal fan. Interesting some of the people I run into in the parks around here, whoa !
The PETA lady could easily convince me to become a vegetarian once again, Tedd. Hell, I may even consider becoming a vegan. :-)
She's beautiful, Tedd, with an unbelievably sexy voice - now I just have to learn French.
Pasi, I've been trying catch in the stat race for a while. Good job.
But I've had the same problem as every one else in April. $25 ... lowest in a while.
yeah....I think I might have even gotten Calvin just a little embarrassed at the office the other day as he had never heard of Melissa Theuriau and I happened to mentioned to try a Google Image Search with "SafeSearch Filtering" in the "Do not filter my search results"
Gee...he seemed....surprised ☺ But he did not complain, but then Emily does not talk with me as much as before.....
@Pasi,
Looking at my listing on Alexa does not really equal earnings however. I ended up with my lowest earnings this time of $7.42. I am up high on that list only because of the large number of comments I make and receive, however many of those are not revenue generating nor tracked as they are either in the Greenhouse looking for Spammers or on some of those massive MSNBC feeds trying to help out in moderator area's as those tend not to be moderated.
I forgot what the name of it is, but Tom or Mark were talking about this on Newsvine, they use another tracking tool that give better detail then Alexa as I understand Alexa can be a bit on the rough side of things.
I dropped from $100 in March to $30 in April. That's the lowest in one year and I've only been here about 15 months and those first three months I had no clue what I was doing.
Interesting to see what Google Trends thinks of us
April looked like a very good month for Newsvine, Tedd, and the revenue was really down. May looks like it may even be worse from that graph. I guess we'll have to wait to see the June earnings to see if things will get better, but of course all of this assumes we're getting ads on our pages, and they are charging decent rates for those ads.
Many of the ad's that I have seen recently have been from basically no name companies and not the major large ad companies like we had before, so I am wondering if that had a effect on the earnings or not ?
I have no idea how the internet advertising business works, Tedd. Isn't it something like television advertising, where a 30 second spot will cost the same whether you're a big company like ATT, or a very small company?
Most of the time the actually "Time Slots" that are available on a given Internet Site are the same unless its a charity or school, but then its also like a public parking garage. Some of those slots are self parking (cheap, you do all the work) or some of them have valet service and get the high end companies that will sign up for service type advertising contracts instead of one or two sessions. Those are the big contracts with the large major companies like a Dell or HP type company. Don't forget that the NYT also dumped Newsvine as a seed list on March 1st, that might have had a impact also. But I have not seen any major company type add's for a while. Just the little guys.
Like right now, only a single ad on this page, for a 76 station....we hardly have any of those around anymore in WA !
Thanks, Tedd. That explains a lot. I'm seeing an ad now for a free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 - hopefully Pasi will get rich off of that one. :^)
free trial of Microsoft Office 2007-----☺----ʞuɐɹɟ ʇıɥs11nq sʇɐɥʇ---☺-----
The Microsoft ad is gone now, damn it - back to the "Duck Hunting by Gamevance" ad.
oh...I understand Frank...the Microsoft Software crashed again, thats why the ad is gone.....
way down. It was never much to begin with, but it is now way down.
My earnings were 16% of my average in April! I made half of what I did in my first month!
Maybe time to work on the better paying sites?
One of my lowest months.
Pasi: "Look! There's an elephant in this room!"
Tedd: "Yep, that's a big 'un."
iarnuocon: "...and it's been here for a while!"
winsome: "parasitic pachyderm prancing, predicting problems"
Walt: "yeah, a @!$%#ing elephant. It's been here awhile. I see it."
I see it.
That is an awfully large pachyderm, boys!
If MSNBC is still using Federated Media for Newsvine, that company has always been high CPM and terrible fill rate. April also would be the period when they were simultaneously claiming to have an offer for $100 million while they scrambled for investors.
So it may be that a disproportionate amount of NV traffic was on remnant traffic. MSNBC should have its own sales force doing the bulk of it so April is probably a blip. Even Elvis had bad albums once in a while so you can give them a break for one month.
For everyone who says 'I don't care about the money', this is your chance to prove it.
Currently, my column receives about 600-1000 pageviews on any given day, but the vast majority is not from NV users. April revenue was down, but this is not a good judge, since I only published five total articles in April, my least-active month at NV ever. Usually it's at least 20 articles.
I was busy with the magazine stuff. We'll see how it goes next month.
I like it! so on all but 5 days over that month you disappointed 600-1000 people a day?
You've given me a target.
Much of the traffic is not to current articles. A lot of it is people viewing old articles from previous links, or they arrive through doing a search and an old article pops up for them. I don't know...I'm no expert here. I just write 'em, I don't analyze 'em too good.
Sorry about the 2x post, but I went off and thought about this for a while. I asked myself: 'What is different NOW, than before April 1, 2008 at NV?'
Simple. Only so much water can fit through the hose, no matter how high you turn up the pressure. One of the reasons revenue is down is probably because the available amount of ad dollars (there WILL be some sort of limit to traffic) is now being spread out to a lot more people than BEFORE April 1.
If I had access to the records, I would not be surprised to see that the total number of people being paid at NV has gone WAY UP, while the average amount paid to each individual has gone down.
No surprise really, if you think about it. Blame it on physics and deliberately inflammatory articles.
Let's just give it the summer and see if stuff doesn't turn around in a month or two, eh?
Oh, I'm not quitting NV just because revenue is down. Not a chance. I copy over the best articles from my column for an eventual big fat book. Like when I reach 1,000 illustrated articles or so.
No, I'm not kidding. It was the plan all along. Some articles are already in a book. (chuckles)
On the other side of the coin, it IS nice to be appreciated, and hopefully earnings will improve.
If you want to help, don't feed the trolls. Old advice, but a goodie.
The money is nice but it's not why I do Newsvine. I'm not going to get too concerned unless it lasts through the summer as Myk said. Then it's time to have serious discussions with the NV staff.

Yes, exactly how I feel, Scott.
They can't run me off by not paying me as much.....sorry I'm not leaving! *going out to find some naked men pictures*
mine went way down, the funny thing is I've been in the top 20 on the leaderboard all month for the first time ever but my earnings went down to 1/3 of what they had been.
Wheel says, in part:
'...the funny thing is I've been in the top 20 on the leaderboard all month for the first time ever but my earnings went down to 1/3 of what they had been.'
The Leaderboard only shows how popular your 'stuff' is among Newsvine users, who make up only a small fraction of the total number of people actually reading your articles. I can't speak for everyone, but according my Google Analytics figures, less than 10% of the visitors to articles at the AB of Seattle column are NV users. The remainder arrive from links at Google, CNN, AOL, and a number of other places. Or they end up at Newsvine, but don't vote or comment because they are not signed up at NV.
June 15-20 - 2,100 visitors to 'The Manson Girls Reach 60 and Counting'. Less than 50 came from NV.
I blame Bush.
That what you get for going after those hairy old ladies Bill...
Heh. Are you speaking from firsthand experience here, Pasi? ;>0
Not bad Bill, I just was thinking you where a bit more on the Political View
Condi ain't my particular cup o' tea, Tedd. In the immortal world of my old budd schnoo, "We can put a man on top of Everest, but we can't put a man on top of Condi."
"We can put a man on top of Everest, but we can't put a man on top of Condi."
I hereby volunteer for that dangerous mission, Bill. I'll glady put party politics aside temporarily to accomplish my goal. After I succeed, she may turn into a kinder, gentler Secretary of State, and peace may finally be achieved in the Middle East. :^)
Whoa Frank likes to climb those ragged cliffs !
Remember guys, Dick Cheney.......before he Dicks you!
Pasi, I posted a link to this article in a thread that's been going in my column on this same issue. I won't link bac there here because I don't want to threadjack you, but I feel like easy navigation between discussions is probably good for everyone who's interested in this particular situation...
: )
Idon'twant tothreadjacksteal page hits from you,
some things never change :-)
Okay, smiley face or not, it's on buddy!
Just kidding, Tedd.
Hey, it's not even worth the effort of linking in order to try to steal page hits, with the current Newsvine deflation going on...
yeah 10 x 0 still = 0 so I agree....... but I had cleaned out my tracker and it was getting later,,,,
I think it's on point too, Pasi.
There are a number of other things happening, and a few residual questions, but I think the April ad market is probably the biggest factor at work.
(That's the biggest reason I wanted to sort of advise people about that thread...there is some good information there...)
Based on that response, and as I said back in the other thread, I'm willing to give it all the benefit of the doubt for a bit longer...as Marilyn said there, based on ads appearing this month, revenues distributed in, say August, should look a lot better.
I am just not ass appreciated here as I thought.
:sigh:
Damn, it is unbelievably tempting to make an "ass appreciated" joke now, but since I am a gentleman, and a big fan of nearing, I will try to avoid the obvious punchlines. :^)
hwa!
damnit!
can't change it now.
since I am a gentleman, and a big fan of nearing, I will try to avoid the obvious punchlines. :^)
Frank, you, sir, truly are a gentleman! (boy, did I set that up, huh?)
but since I am agentleman, huge brown noser and a big fan of nearing,
I'd make a smart-assed comment, Tedd, but I'm really bummed out. I just read in a NYT News Flash that George Carlin died today. He was 71.
Yeah..I saw that also, I loved George Carlin, he was a classic.
George Carlin died today
:sniff, sniff:
:sigh:
:sniff:
Wow, I feel like Jessica Alba or somethin'...
didn't know I warranted a brown noser!
No. If you were Jessica Alba, you would have a Cash of your own.
didn't know I warranted a brown noser!
nearing,
that was meant for Frank, not you !
Tedd Riggs:
didn't know I warranted a brown noser!
nearing,
that was meant for Frank, not you !
I know but who was he brown nosing....?
Frank was brown nosing the many fans he has (including you)
I was somewhat flirting, perhaps,,,,
ok so I am sooo not Jessica then.
but if you have any more pictures to support my memory
Pasi,
ok so I am sooo not Jessica then.
No....You have a brain and lots of wisdom, unlike that other person....huge difference...
I was going to take the girl to Breakfast at Tiffany's but looks like the Golden Arches will have to suffice..
Oh dear, just means that my yacht will now take years to materialise instead of months, as I hoped, unless I bag a rich guy like Tedd!! Thanks for the bad news, Pasi! :o(
at least I am good for something, However that rich part,,,,well,,
They don't call Tedd "Mr. Money Bags" for nothing, you know, Ms. Cyprah. :O)
at the corner of 17th and H streets NW, the site of the old Riggs Bank.
There are some past issues that tended to somewhat screw up what old George started out years ago as your nice little corner bank in the Washington DC area. Yeah....What a way to get your name in the news.....ugh....
Lets just say, there is a certain family name that is something like Allbritton and well......they don't exactly get too many friendly Christmas cards for destroying a once nice family business....
They don't call Tedd "Mr. Money Bags" for nothing, you know, Ms. Cyprah. :O)
Yes, I'm beginning to find that out, Sandie, hence why I'm looking into the possibilities, in view of this bad month's earnings. :o)
It might help if Newsvine could stay running for more then an hour or a two...today has not been so great either..
Seems to be getting worse..:o(...but there are a lot of things being done it seems. New things keep appearing at the same time!
Yes, I could not log on to the site at all, yesterday evening, and today has been rather "hit and miss" too.
