Shooter tried to get 9mm pistol, but police gave him license only for .22. After crime seen investigation, this seems to have saved lives. Shooter tried to shoot people through windows and doors, but .22 is not powerful enough to penetrated these obstacles and maintain energy. 10.11.2007, 12:54

There's totally eight victims at the moment and the shooter is very likely to die in his wounds. 8:35 PM

Shooter has died last evening at 22:00, local time. 8.11.2007, 9:44 AM

All the victims have been identified, and families have received the message about their lost. Three of the victims were under 18. All the victims had several shooting wounds. Victims seem to be chosen randomly. 8.11.2007, 7:22 PM

Shooter tried to burn the school also. He had gasoline and over 320 bullets still left after firing 69 times. Shooter had already spread the gasoline and tried several times to set up fire but failed. 8.11.2007, 7:22 PM

At least seven, one female, two girls and four boys are death according to hospitals and police at Jokela, Tuusula, Finland. Number of victims may raise. Ten were wounded, but only one by bullets and rest were damaged while escaping through windows.

Police arrived in 10 minutes and made a contact with the shooter. Shooter shot at police and the situation was chaotic. Police did not fire any shots, but it took about two hours for police to secure the school area and get all children out from school. 8:40 PM

Student's were escaping through windows and police started evacuate personnel during the incident. About 100 police participated in the operation and several medical personnel.

The shooter was a 18 years old student of the High School. Shooter told about shooting with videos and articles in Internet before the incident. The shooter is in critical condition and in hospital at the moment. Shooter has shot himself in head.

All the videos with the shooters nickname "Sturmgeist89" seem to be removed from Youtube. One video was named: "Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007"

I found this: Finnish School Shooter: A mirror of Sturmgeist89's youtube page. Both his youtube and rapidshare accounts were removed soon after the massacre.

Here is one video made by the shooter (still available). 9:03 PM

Shooter seems to have had a political manifesto. His manifesto: "How natural selection turned to idiotic selection" is written in Finnish and tells about mankind's regression and how he has developed on higher level. He writes about "Totaalinen Sota Ihmiskuntaa Vastaan", total war against mankind.

Parts from manifesto:

Homo Sapiens, HAH! More like Homo Idioticus.

Hate is the thing, that I love, and I'm full of hate.

Of course, there is a final solution: the death of the mankind.

Totalitary governements rule people with school system, mass consuming, mass media, violence monopole (police, army) and laws, which criminalize the individual.

This was sad to hear about from a normally peaceful land.

I found the following comment from the AP to be surprising as I had always thought guns were not legal in Finland ?

"It was the first known school shooting in Finland, where gun ownership is fairly common by European standards, but shootings are rare."

I knew that hunting and for sports it was very popular, but can you keep one at home, or is it "checked out" for sporting events, hunting events and other special times ?

This cannot be as common an occurence in Finland as in many other so called civilized parts of the world (like the UK and US). I know I generalise, but it is still surprising how shocked one feels when coming across your article.

Sorry to hear that the evils of modern living are shattering your otherwise tranquil environment. Trust you will be ready to help with your army experience if needed.

stay safe...

It seems like the USA bashing month !

I know I speak on behalf of many non-Americans that the majority of us do not have an issue with most things American and especially most things that Americans hold dear. The issue is mostly with political and strategic matters that has been part of US foreign policy for decades. Many impartial observers have been moved to comment on how this undermines the vision that the founding fathers held dear. As do a lot of Americans through history. I am indeed sorry if it seems that non-Americans are bashing everything to do with the US. Not the way it should be perceived.

I always think of Finland as one of the few places that crime seems to be a non-issue other then a few cases of people having a tad to much to drink and getting a bit noisy. So sorry to hear about all of this Pasi !

Sometimes there seems to be a double standard. I wonder how some of those people would feel if Americans kept criticizing their countries re issues dealing with political and strategic matters that have been part of their policies-- both foreign

and

domestic-- for decades?

Recently I read an article about some harsh criticism of the US by a government official -- I believe he was either Iranian or Saudi. It seemed a bit strange...

Pasi -- I too add my voice to the others here - it is a sad day for everyone; I am sorry that this has happened to the people of your nation. The loss of life and the impacts on the families is overwhelming. I hope that this turns out to be a very isolated event for your people. I appreciate that you are a voice for your country and its people here on Newsvine.
