As we all economists remember something from our studies in the university, I do remember hearing something about entry strategies - or was it in the Military Academy, perhaps both. Anyway I wondered if I could combine my two education and write something totally unscientific about entry strategies to Newsvine. I'm so glad not being a researcher anymore so I can write without being able to proof or give references.
I developed this article and I made a difference between strategy and styles.

Strategy
1) Front Attack
You will go there where the audience already is, you choose popular subject(s) and try to be on front page from the very beginning. You may write about Bush, Newsvine or daily popular issues.

2) Side Attack.
With this strategy I had difficulties in finding an example. This could be that you choose a subject or a target group which does not exist yet. If Bush is already popular you might write about Condoleezza or Hillary. If you don't get success you will change the place. Because you are the only player or one of the few on the field you have more liberty.

3) Choosing the Strong Point. (I'm not sure if this is the correct English term)
You choose a certain subject or certain target group for your articles. You will concentrate on your area and try to be successful only there. You articles don't have to be very good but over the time you will achieve the audience you are aiming to.

A form of Strong Point: Niche, example: Cash

4) Guerrilla Attack
You have no specific subject or target group. You write different stories to different target groups. You can easily jump from sports to technology. You perhaps write quite rare but you concentrate a lot to the quality of single articles. If you don't get success on one place you will soon change to other place.

Different Styles
A)Quantity
You may choose to use the pure force, the quantity. For a columnist this could be just writing and seeding as much articles as you can. It is not necessary to choose any specific subject and you don't have to make so shiny diamonds. It no matter if most of your articles never get any votes. You'll manage with your 5% of successful articles.

B)Quality
The other way is to use the quality. You write and seed less but you try to get attention every time.
C) Provocation
We all know this. Attack against other's opinions, don't be so worried about staying in trouth, perhaps you don't mind attacking also agaist person's not just opinions.

I guess by these definitions, I am a strong point guy. I write science but ( try to) make it funny - and include a girl. On a left leaning political news site, it doesn't get more niche than that.

Pasi - fine article - well done

I thought you took a girl and tried to add science.

OOPS that was ad hominem - sorry :)
-------------------

PASI - yes I agree - Cash has created a great Science / Hotchicks BRAND

It is well done and not easy to create a brand

Side Attack. With this strategy I had difficulties in finding an example.

For example; I was jealous of Cash's fine brand - so I tried a steal-idea-copy-cat-side-attack strategy

YES - I created the hot-guys tag. It has met with only limited success - due in part to my lessor writing skills and also because Americans just don't like David Hasselhoff as much as fine Europeans like you and I.

Hmmm? I'll have to give this a bit more thought before deciding which applies to me. I am leaning towards #4, but I share elements with most of these styles.

Thanks, but no thanks, dont want to own anything more to do with penises than the one I already have. As for Cash owning vaginas, well, er, um...though I know he'd like to think that, I'm certain LS would have something to say about that!

I don't write articles or seed very much. I'm really more of a comment guy. But I think the same strategies hold. I mainly comment on articles dealing with religion, US politics, and global warming; oh, also pretty much all the "meta" stuff, too. If there were popular discussions on the 'Vine dealing with GLBT issues, I'd probably comment there.

Occasionally I'll comment on science articles or whatever Cash posts. :-)

So I guess I'm kind of a strong point commenter with a few distinct strong points.

Pasi, I must be a combination of all. I believe in a strong frontal attack while feinting left and right to get down to the meat of my subjects while using my good humor to distract my opponents. Once I have established a beachhead or consolidated my front I tend to go into guerilla mode and am not beyond a sneak punch or two.

Anyone who has a Queen Ant named after him must act like a regal character. So I will lead the charge and be around when it is time to pick up the casualties as well. Pasi, you are a good guy.

Oh, oh, this was supposed to be about writing in a social atmosphere. I only write what I feel I need to.

Pasi, it's soccer in America. Chill is poking at Zaki for not using 'football.'

In America, the football is thrown - and the only guys who touch it with their foot cannot get into the Football Hall of Fame.

I love that about us.

Hey Pasi,

Sorry for the soccer joke - I am originally Canadian - HOCKEY!!!!!!!

Cash - even more bizarre - in Rugby, when the ball is carried over the end-line it must be TOUCH-DOWN-ed - the ball must touch the ground. If you arecarried through the end zone with te ball in the air, it doesn't count.

Why the hell does the NFL call it a TOUCH DOWN

AMERICAN FOOTBALL???? They steal all the names and change the rules.
