I've been playing with an idea about people building own virtual web hybrid (VWH) for personal purposes (politics, money, reputation, fun?) in web with mostly free components. A mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience. Wikipedia: Mashup
With VWH I mean a combination of websites and applications, which are some how linked together and share or support same goal. The form of virtual web hybrid is no longer clear and it is easily changed by adding or reducing linked components.
The components of VWH do not share the same target group and may be divided in space and time for different languages and different cultures. However they can use same content, like videos and pictures, as long the content is not culture/language related. The category of components I have in mind is following:
1) Content components which you produce by yourself. These components may be articles, pictures, videos, music or other products in electronic form.
2) Content platforms where your content is anchored at least for a small time and where you produce content several times. These components may be websites, blogs or like Newsvine columns. You can use free platforms available or buy your own web space for more free use.
3) Product launch pads, where you promote your platforms or content. These components may be like Digg, discussion forums or you can produce a promotion video to Youtube. You'll have to use common sense in promotion because no one likes spam. You should divide your promotion in time and space. Like with Newsvine you must respect CoH. Newsvine is for collaborative discovery and discussion of the news, not self-promotion. Posting full articles which also appear on your blog is acceptable but seeding your own stuff is not.
4) Extra parts are whatever components you come up with. It may be good to have an interface for you virtual hybrid but that is not necessary. You can embed some applications to your pages for purposes that I can't even imagine at the moment.
Even if I said that I was looking for free products it is good to have your own website where you can do anything (legal) you wish. So, make up a plan for your personal virtual web hybrid and start today. You may have some components already there.
Just download a copy of Drupal - that's what NowPublic, Assignment Zero, etc. did. You can do collaborations for books, blogs, polls, pages. Customize the interface with CSS and add a few modules and you're off and running.
...as we move inexorably closer to the 3D web!
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
